Peterevy The Peterevy tree is a slow-growing deciduous tree reaching a height of up to 25 m. It has alternate leaves which are about 14 cm long, of elliptical shape, greyish green and have a rough surface. Its intensively fragrant white blossoms appear in umbels of many flowers at the end of its twigs. Cedro The Cedro tree is one of the most important species of the Paraguayan forests. Due to intense exploitation this species is acutely endangered. Because it needs a lot of light it prefers open forest locations. The tree is partially deciduous and develops a dense, broad and round treetop. It reaches a height of up to 35 m and blossoms from August until October. Guatambu The Guatambu tree is an evergreen tree and with its height of 20 to 35 m it belongs amongst the high growing trees of this zone. It blossoms between September and November and is only to be found in Paraguay, in the south of Brazil and in north-eastern Argentina in other words it is endemic in this area. The number of specimen of this tree was heavily reduced in the course of the last years. Lapacho The Lapacho tree is one of the most famous trees of Paraguay and is counted amongst the hardest precious woods in the world. It reaches a height of up to 35 m and carries pink or yellow bell-shaped blossoms from Mai until August. Besides in Paraguay it also is found in Panama, Columbia, Argentina and Brazil. South American Indians call the Lapacho tree the tree of life. Yvyra pyta The Yvyra pyta tree belongs to the family of the leguminous plants. It reaches a height of up to 25 m and has one or several upright trunks and a wide spreading treetop. From November to January it shows its luxuriant yellow blossoms. Yvyra in the language of the Guraní means wood’ and pyta red’, thus Yvyra pyta meaning red wood’. This species is native to Paraguay, the south of Brazil, Northern Argentina and Uruguay. Yvyra ro The Yvyra ro tree is a slowly to rapidly growing tree reaching a hight of up to 2035 m and a diameter of up to 6095 cm. Its wood is of a lively bright brown to reddish brown colour. Yvyra in the language of the Guraní means wood’ and ro bitter’, thus Yvyra ro meaning bitter wood’. Besides in Paraguay this species of tree is also growing quite frequently in Bolivia, Northern Argentina and Southern Brazil. Tatare The Tatare tree is growing at a moderate speed reaching its maximum height of approximately 12 m after 20 years. The diameter of its trunk then varies between 30 und 50 cm. Its wood has a deep yellow colour with a whitish yellow grain. In the language of the Guraní tata means fire’ and in this context re means to stink’, thus Tatare meaning stinks in the fire’ when the wood is burnt. Besides in Paraguay this species of tree is also growing quite frequently in Bolivia, Northern Argentina and Southern Brazil. Curupay The Curupay tree is a huge rapidly growing deciduous tree with a flattened out crown. Its leaves are strongly feathered (20-40 pairs). In the Guraní language Curupa means warty skin’ (like with toads) and y in this context means everywhere’, thus Curupay meaning warts everywhere on the bark’. Besides in Paraguay this species of tree is also growing quite frequently in Peru, Bolivia, Northern Argentina and Southern Brazil. Thank you Harald for photos and words.
