PRECIOUS WOOD Peterevy >1 The Peterevy tree is a slow-growing deciduous tree reaching a height of up to 25 m. It has alternate leaves which are about 14 cm long, of elliptical shape, greyish green and have a rough surface. Its intensively fragrant white blossoms appear in umbels of many flowers at the end of its twigs. Cedro - Cedar >2 The Cedro tree is one of the most important species of the Paraguayan forests. Due to intense exploitation this species is acutely endangered. Because it needs a lot of light it prefers open forest locations. The tree is partially deciduous and develops a dense, broad and round treetop. It reaches a height of up to 35 m and blossoms from August until October. GuatambĂș - Ivorywood >3 The GuatambĂș tree is an evergreen tree and with its height of 20 to 35 m it belongs amongst the high growing trees of this zone. It blossoms between September and November and is only to be found in Paraguay, in the south of Brazil and in north-eastern Argentina in other words it is endemic in this area. The number of specimen of this tree was heavily reduced in the course of the last years. Lapacho - Brasilian Walnut >4 The Lapacho tree is one of the most famous trees of Paraguay and is counted amongst the hardest precious woods in the world. It reaches a height of up to 35 m and carries pink or yellow bell-shaped blossoms from Mai until August. Besides in Paraguay it also is found in Panama, Columbia, Argentina and Brazil. South American Indians call the Lapacho tree the tree of life. Yvyra pyta Paraguayan Rosewood >5 The Yvyra pyta tree belongs to the family of the leguminous plants. It reaches a height of up to 25 m and has one or several upright trunks and a wide spreading treetop. From November to January it shows its luxuriant yellow blossoms. This species is native to Paraguay, the south of Brazil, northern Argentina and Uruguay. VALUABLE WOOD Eucalypt >6 The Eucalypt tree is a very fast-growing species of tree, produces good quality timber and is very robust and inured. As far as the situation in Paraguay is concerned the statement that this undemanding pioneering species is draining the soil to great depths is not a valid statement because climatic conditions in this region are quite different from the south of Europe. Also the ground water table is generally very high and yields enough moisture. Therefore Eucalypt demonstrably does not cause any damage due to dryness in other plants.
